why is it that the right hemisphere of the brain controls motor movement in the left part of the body?
Please help I am stuck in answering this question i think it has something to do with nerves crossing over but am unsure…. any ideas as I would be very grateful
Yes, this is of course due to the nerves crossing over, but the question really is *why* is there this crossing over. What purpose does it serve … what advantage does it provide (or did it ever provide).
This is known as ‘contralateralism’ and it may just be a side-effect that appeared in some ancestral vertebrate (as all tetrapods (as far as I know) have this feature).
In other words, it makes no difference as far as the brain is concerned. Since all nerves from any body part below the neck have to travel through the spinal cord (i.e. they have to go from the side of the body to a central ‘freeway’) … it is exactly the same distance to either side of the brain. So the question is why, when they get to the brain, are the signals distributed to the opposite side from which they originated.
We should also note that things seem different for sense organs physically located nearer to the brain. But we should remember that in older vertebrates, this is not so true … the right eye is not located in the front of the head (like us) but farther to the right side of the body .. and the brain is much smaller … so the eye-brain distance is further.
So there may have been some long-lost advantage that caused this feature to emerge in an ancestor with a much simpler nervous system (with very simple pathways from sense organs to motor pathways, where the brain was little more than a way-station), and our branch of vertebrates have simply inherited it.
