can you paint over polished brass trim on a gas fireplace? Will it stay?
i have a heatilator gas fireplace that has polished brass trim across it in various places. i want to get rid of the brass and either replace it with something else (but cant find the parts) or paint over it. Any ideas?
Instead of using steel wool. I would use a paint stripper on it. This will get rid of any finish that came from the factory. ICI Paints makes a latex stripper that is the best I have ever used.
It is latex so the fumes are not noxious and I have worked with it without gloves.
After you strip it and clean it give it some time to dry. Then sand it with 220 grit sandpaper to put microscopic scratches in the surface. of the metal. By stripping it first then lightly sanding it will promise you excellent adhesion.
Use a product called DTM (direct to metal) paint. This paint is specifically made to paint metal as the name implies.
It is available in many brand names at a paint store not a box store.
Some of these paints are self priming. Ask this when you buy the paint. The guys at the paint store will be able to tell you.
I am a retired Painting Contractor so I have done this numerous times.
