How can I use an existing 8″ insulated chimney on a wood stove with a 6″ connection?
The existing stainless steel double wall chimney presently starts at the ceiling of the main floor, through the second floor, attic and roof. there is a single wall adaptor to 6″ at the ceiling. I don’t feel it’s safe to use the adaptor and single wall down to the stove. What is proper?
You can run the double-wall until you get a minimum of 18″ of clearance (or 24″ depending on your _insurance_ requirements) from any wall or ceiling. Then run your adaptor and to the stove. There are also double-wall reducing fittings such that you could run that right down to the stove. But generally most codes permit single-wall flue pipe as long as correct clearances are maintained.
In our case it was our insurance carrier that dictated how the flue was installed – stringent but after it was all done it gave us peace of mind.
